How did you encourage people to leave reviews? I know I have more than 50 readers, but they’re just not reviewing! Argh!

Joanne, I requested reviews from bloggers 5 months before INHALE’s release date. This giveaway of the 2nd book has helped a lot with Amazon – I’m offering a free copy of EXHALE to anyone who posts a review of INHALE on Amazon.

Securing reviews has been one of the hardest parts of my self-publishing process. I spent literally WEEKS contacting reviewers. About half of the ones I emailed said yes to a review. About another half of those actually posted reviews to Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s a double-edged sword. We as writers need unbiased reviewers to help us get our names out there. MOST reviewers are responsible and follow through, but some are only in it for free books and never hold up their end of the bargain. I feel that if I send you a book with the understanding that you will read it and write a fair, unbiased review, you should do that. If you hate the book or something comes up that prevents you from reviewing, you should let me know you can’t do it.

I learned my lesson with INHALE, so when I released EXHALE, I only sent the book to people who I trust to follow through and who liked INHALE (because why read book 2 if you hated book 1?). It resulted in fewer reviews, but I think the quality of the reviews is much better for it. I *know* these people are actually reading and not just skimming to get it over with, which has also happened to me.

So to answer your question in a long-winded way, maybe you should consider offering something to readers who leave reviews? Got any swag you can send them or free copies of a short story? Just a thought.

Oh no, I’m late! I saw your book on Cuddlebuggery.com and was very intrigued. I read the synopsis of your book on Amazon and Goodreads, and just had to visit your blog. I added “Inhale” to my to-read list on Goodreads. Can’t wait to read it! :)

Sorry you were late, Esther. Apparently, I was too. I just found your comment stuck in my spam filter and freed it. HA!

Thanks for adding INHALE to your TBR and for visiting here. You’re awesome!
